Imports of Personal Effects

Under the Customs Act 1913.

"Personal effects" in respect of a passenger, means effects of the passenger, which accompanied that passenger or which, in the Collector's opinion, could reasonably have accompanied that passenger.

Persons travelling to Norfolk Island to take up temporary or permanent residence may send their belongings to Norfolk Island as unaccompanied baggage or as personal effects and in some circumstances this can include a motor vehicle. (For more information click here Prescribed personal effects that are motor vehicles). The goods will be treated the same as any import and will be subject to Customs examination and control.

To help facilitate clearance of your personal effects, you are advised to list the items packed, and provide any documentation supporting the value of any goods that are under 12 months old. Any personal effects arriving via ship will need to be inspected by Customs, before being unpacked. You will need to arrange a time with Norfolk Island Customs to inspect your goods.

Things to remember when packing your goods;

Any implements used in the garden or which contain any soil must be thoroughly cleaned, NO SOIL is to remain. These items may be inspected and treated by the Health and Quarantine Officer. Any fumigation costs will be at your expense.

Under the Liquor Act 1960 the private importation of alcohol without prior approval is prohibited, this includes any partially consumed bottles of spirits, wine or cellar collections.

You may need to produce invoices, receipts or supporting documentation for goods under 12 months old. This could include gifts.
