Prescribed personal effects - motor vehicles

Under the Customs Regulations 1986, you may import a motor vehicle as part of your personal effects. (One vehicle per family unit) providing you can satisfy the following:-

That you ordinarily reside or intend to reside on Norfolk Island

That you have owned and used the vehicle for the whole of the period of 12 months preceding your departure for Norfolk Island

That the vehicle has been registered in the family name and NOT a company name

That you or any member of your family have never imported a motor vehicle previously without payment of duty under the Customs Act 1913.

And that you undertake to pay any duties payable if the vehicle is sold or disposed of within the period of 2 years.

You will be required to supply documentary proof that you have owned the vehicle for the prescribed period, and a current value for the vehicle.

You will need to ensure the vehicle is free from any soil, insects or any vermin. If the vehicle arrives in an unclean state and any soil or vermin is found, the vehicle may be refused entry into Norfolk Island or the vehicle may need to be cleaned to a satisfactory state, as directed by the Health and Quarantine officer in charge. All cleaning and charges for cleaning are the responsibility of the importer. To save yourself unnecessary costs, ensure you have the vehicle thoroughly cleaned and free of vermin before importation.
